UNIT 6: Choice 1 - House Design
     

Assignment -   Suggested Time: 20 to 30 hours or 5 to 6 weeks of class periods. Note: if project does not represent this amount of time commitment full marks will not be awarded.

Criteria: Students will design an original small 1 story house.

  1. Search a number of home design sites on the Web.House Plans Find a plan you like. You can copy that plan or make changes. Keep your original plan to hand inEg:
  2. Open Solid Edge Program. Open - New - Click on the "More Tab" and open "Normeng.par" This is an Imperial Part meaning all measurements are in feet and inches. Architectural drawings are done in imperial.
  3. Layout a floor plan using conventional sizes for rooms, hallways and fixtures. See the "Architectural handout. Your floor plan drawing should look similar to this example.

  4. Create a 3D house from the floor plan.
  5. When you have completed your project you will print it off and hand it in. It should be in a Portfolio Cover
  6. Your Portfolio should include: Drawings of the floor plan, Rendering and original plan.
  7. Hand in your digital file to Beck _Handin saved as "Final_1_yourlastname_initial"
  8. Save it and also have a back up.
  9. It is recommended that you show creativity and a good grasp software use. The highest marks will be for the projects that show effort and creativity.

Frequently Asked Questions : Please review the following before you start it may save you some frustration.

  1. Imperial measurement: 1 foot ( 1' ) is equal to 12 inches ( 12" ) Written eg. 6'-8"
  2. The lowest precision is 1" or 1/2"
  3. Exterior walls are 6" Interior walls are 4" Regular walls are min 8' high.
  4. Exterior doors are 3' Interior doors are 2'-8" Doors are 6'-8" high.
  5. Halls are 3' wide
  6. Closets are 2' deep. Closet doors are in 6" increments.
  7. Kitchen and Bathroom counters are 2' deep. Kitchen counters are 36" high. Bathroom counters are 34" high.
  8. Widows are in 6" increments. Windows are 6'-8" high and as deep as you design.
  9. Minimum Room sizes are found on the "Architectural Handout" Keep your rooms reasonable.
  10. Your house must have: Kitchen, Bathrooms, Bedrooms, Dinning/Living, Laundry.
  11. Bedrooms must have a window and closet.
  12. Stove, fridge, washer and dryers are 2'-6 X 2'-6" Tub is 2'-6" X 5'-0" (Templates are available for fixtures.)
