Mouat Music Takes Gold!

On Wednesday, Feb. 20th, 2013 Mouat's Junior and Senior Jazz Bands performed at the Kiwanis Jazz Festival, which was being held at Capilano University in North Vancouver.

Both groups played extremely well! The Juniors were awarded a silver rating, and our senior group received the much-coveted gold rating. The judges were particularly pleased by the senior group's ensemble feel, musicianship and attention to detail.

Our soloists were also much appreciated: Anna Wozniak on Alto Sax, Prab Ganda on Trumpet, Alec Postlethwaite on Tenor Sax in the Junior group; Tiana Gartly on trumpet, Danielle and the vocal stylings of Beth Nessim for the seniors.

A very enjoyable and successful day for our jazz bands!

Character Council Hosts Family of Schools

Yesterday, Mouat’s Character Council hosted a Family of Schools event for the grade four and seven students from our feeder schools. A focus on Mouat’s six character values and on how to be a positive leader introduced future Mouat students to what it means to be a hawk. Students from Howe and Chief Dan middle schools, as well as from Centennial, Ten-Broeck, Roberta Bondar, Margaret Stenersen and Sandy Hill elementary schools attended. Representatives of the Abbotsford Character Council and Abbotsford School District were also present.

The day kicked off at 9:30 with a rally featuring a speech from former NHL player and Abbotsford Heat president Ryan Walter. Attending students were also addressed by Mouat graduates Zack Melhus and Mike Perry about the value of character at Mouat. Energy was high with a lively dance-off and a performance by Mouat’s (almost) legendary rap group, The Triangle.

The grade fours departed at 10:30, while the grade sevens remained to participate in workshops led by Mouat students. Mouat’s six values were broken down in detail and our future hawks were given the opportunity to decide how they personally would use good character to make a difference in their own lives and in the lives of others.

Moving forward, Mouat’s Character Council has promised to aid the classes that attended in bringing to life their own plans to implement character in their schools or community. After all, that’s what it means to be a hawk.

A Message from Chief Dan George Middle's VP

The Mouat Fab Five
The Mouat School of Character is living up to its name. A prime example is a group of 5 Grade 12 students who have volunteered their time to coach the Grade 8 Boys basketball team at Chief Dan George Middle. For all those involved in the world of Basketball you know that this is a huge commitment. Head coach Harman Gill has pulled in 4 assistant coaches: Chris Blake, Jasper Arcigal, Conner Gear, and Kevin Grewal. This group of young men is a well oiled machine. The service they have provided is exceptional and the maturity they have displayed goes well beyond expectations. They do not take the easy road by simply throwing out a ball and letting the boys play. Practices are well planned out and there are systems of play for both offence and defence.

Their contribution however, goes well beyond the game of basketball or the skills being taught. They affect the lives of their players in a positive way. They model a great attitude and a strong work ethic. They model RESPECT; respect for the game, respect for the team, respect for each other, respect for their families, and respect for their school and community.

No words can adequately express the true impact the Mouat Fab Five has had on a group of young basketball players at Chief Dan George Middle. I feel privileged to be able to watch the transformation that is occurring, both in the coaches and in the players. So in closing, all I can do is simply say "Thank you, gentlemen for a job well done. Your time and effort is appreciated and has not gone unnoticed."

Mouat Basketball Teams Take Home Two Banners at Abbotsford City Police Tournament

WJM Hawk Sebastian Muermann rises to block a shot from a Yale opponent in Saturday's final match

In last weekend’s Abbotsford City Police Tournament, all four Mouat teams showed excellent teamwork and did very well. Both junior and senior girls placed first, senior boys came a close second and junior boys came fifth.

Please read the following summaries of the action by Selyen Singh from the junior girls team and Sebastian Muermann from the senior boys.

The WJM Hawks junior girls team showed their passion on the court this weekend, taking the banner.

In game one, the girls took on the Abby Christian Knights. They played as a team and everyone contributed to the 75-17 win.

In game two, the team faced last year's rival, the MEI Eagles. Once again the Hawks came out victorious with a score 72-24.

In game three, the girls were excited to step on the court to represent Mouat well against the Rick Hansen Hurricanes. The Hawks cruised to a 31-0 run, and then continued to dominate in a 65-17 win over Hansen.

Our Senior Boys Basketball team defeated Abby Senior by a score of 77-56 in the first round of the 4th Annual Abbotsford City Police Basketball Tournament on Thursday, December 6th. Hosted by Abby Senior, the game was consistently led by the Hawks, with all players seeing the court, and contributing to a resounding win. Top scorer was Corey Hauck with fifteen points and six assists, and Corey was selected as Player of the Game. This win advanced the Hawks to the finals against cross-town rivals, the Number 2 in B.C ranked Yale Secondary Lions.

On Saturday, Dec 8^th, (more commonly known as Championship Saturday) all final games were played in the afternoon at Columbia Bible College. The Senior Boys played in the last evening game, in front of a huge crowd of Abbotsford Basketball fans. After leading throughout the first half, the senior boys battled hard, started to get into foul trouble and could not defeat the Lions, losing 89-80. Player of the game was Sebastian Muermann, who fouled out in the fourth quarter, but still managed to be top scorer with 22 points and 14 rebounds.

A very special thanks to all organizers of the games, the referees, the MEI Screaming Eagles for the musical entertainment, and the Abbotsford Skipping Sensations for their halftime shows. The WJ Mouat Hawks would also like to give their thanks to the Abbotsford Police Department for putting on the Tournament.

For many of us, $50 represents fun things like: 10 coffees (yes, only 10), a dinner out with someone special, a new video game, air time for a smart phone, 50 new apps on the iTunes store, etc....

For one Mouat student, $50 represented an opportunity to do the right thing, or the alternative, an opportunity to lose some personal integrity.

This young man found $50 on the hallway floor today. He immediately brought it down to the office and let the secretary know which locker it was found in front of. As a School of Character, we are so proud of the decisions our students make every day to make a positive difference.

Thanks to this student for modelling good character today!!!

PS - We thought about naming the student, but we're guessing that someone committed to doing the right thing in this way probably isn't looking for personal recognition.

Celebrating Mouat's Diversity

Ever noticed how different everybody at Mouat is? Our school is made special by its diversity and multiculturalism. On any given day, I hear at least four or five different languages being spoken in our halls. How awesome is that? It is this meeting of traditions and values that promotes the rich learning environment that we find here at Mouat.

To celebrate this diversity, Social Justice is making a Mouat Family Cookbook containing family recipes submitted by staff and students. We would love to have your contributions! If you would like to have your recipe included in our collection, please follow these directions:

· type up your recipe and make sure that you include an ingredient list and clear instructions

· provide a short anecdote about your recipe (why you chose it, why it is special to you, why it is important to your culture or anything else that you want to say about it)

· email your recipe to Miss Mangat at ranbir_mangat@sd34.bc.ca no later than Monday, December 3

The completed books will be going on sale later in December. Proceeds will be going to the local food bank. We look forward to receiving your recipes!

When you were growing up did you spend time reading with your parents before going to bed? How many hours of your childhood were passed curled up beside someone who cared for you, sharing a book together? For many students, bedtime stories were their first true introduction to what reading means. Unfortunately, not everybody has the opportunity to spend time reading with a parent or mentor.

This semester's block C Social Justice class has created an action plan to read to those who are unable to read on their own and who do not necessarily have a mentor who may assist them. We will be showing Mouat's sense of caring by going out into the community and reading with young children, ESL students, seniors and anybody else who would enjoy our reading.

Each participant in the project will be completing three hours of reading with others, in return for monetary pledges from friends and families. The money raised will go towards building a library in Bangladesh. Youth literacy rates in Bangladesh are among the lowest in the world. With limited access to books, children are incapable of effectively improving their literacy skills. By providing reading resources to youth in a Bangladeshi community, libraries improve literacy and serve as valuable information centres. With access to texts on a variety of subjects, community members will be able to better identify problems and determine ways by which they may be remedied. Improvements in this generation’s education will lead to a more pronounced emphasis being placed on the education of following generations. Thus, the establishment of a library sets in motion a prolonged effort at eliminating illiteracy and poor education.

We will be having a meeting in Miss St-Hilaire's room (#138) at lunch on Monday, November 26 to discuss the project in more detail with those who would like to get involved. This is open to everybody at Mouat and we would love to have you participate. Each year, 40 students are selected from high schools and CEGEPs across Canada to come to Ottawa and work as pages in the House of Commons.

This year, I was selected to be part of the House of Commons Page Program. Over the past few months, I have had the opportunity to serve Members of Parliament and other parliamentary officials during the proceedings in the House of Commons. As a page, I have the chance to learn the workings Canadian politics and of Parliamentary procedure from a unique perspective. I have also had the chance to meet other young people from across the country. It is an amazing experience.

One of my most memorable moments was my very first shift in the House of Commons. After all these months of memorizing the MPs’ names and of after participating in a full week of training, I was going to work in the House of Commons! I remember being nervous and uncertain, but thanks to my co-workers and supervisors, my first shift went smoothly, and before I knew it was already done and I was looking forward to my next shift!

Hello WJM,

I just wanted to write a quick email to show my appreciation [of] the class, compassion and positivity shown by your two Jr. Girls Volleyball coaches. At a tournament at Southridge School Fri/Sat that I was present at, your team played against another team with a very aggressive, and negative coach. We had one of our grade 12 students serving as a referee for this game. After watching the opposing coach yell at our student ref, the two young women, on their break went to a local Tim Hortons to get the student an ‘apology’ box of donuts. They said, they thought she was doing a great job, and hoped this would brighten her day. This gesture was very touching, and made a significant impact on the student, and myself. I am not sure in which way these two young women are connected to the school, but their actions served as powerful ambassadors to your school. It is too often that emails are only written in complaint, and I wanted to take the opportunity to highlight the action of these two women.

Come Support Our Boys & Our Community!

Tomorrow (Friday, November 2), the Senior Varsity Football team plays Lord Tweedsmuir at 7:30pm at the Mouat field and the game will be key in deciding our placement in the playoff draw. This game is the final home game of the 2012-2013 season, and for our graduating Hawks, the final game they’ll ever play on Mouat turf. Many of these Hawks have been playing football alongside each other for four years now, with this year marking their last at Mouat. With an amazing season behind their backs so far, the boys look to enter playoffs with a head full of steam. They are anxious to put on a great show tomorrow on their own field, and give their faithful crowd an amazing game. We’ve had great turnouts at the games all year, so let’s make this one amazing.

Let’s get the crowd Mouat deserves, and give our boys the support we’ve been giving them all year. Throw on some Mouat colours and we will see you at the game!

While you’re preparing to go watch an amazing game, make sure you remember to bring a can of non-perishable food, as there will be a food drive going on at the time. Help us show that Mouat cares for our community while we cheer on our team.

Mouat Hosts Abbotsford

City of Character Youth Forum

On Thursday, October 19^th, W.J Mouat hosted the Abbotsford City of Character Youth Forum for students, teachers, administrators and community representatives wishing to discuss the implementation of a city-wide character initiative. Mouat is the first school in Canada to pursue such an initiative, via the participation of students, staff and administrators since 2011. In early 2012, Mouat’s student-led Character Council met for the first time, and continues to do so on a monthly basis. Participants include students from all grades and representatives from many different facets of the school: T.V. and Film, Student Leadership, P.E. Leadership, Connections Club, Varsity Football Team, Benevolent Nerds, and the Improv Team. A smaller group of student leaders meet with teachers and administrators on a weekly basis. In spring 2012, the Character Council led “We Are Hawks Week” as a school-wide initiative to promote our six character values and their importance in our school community. Events included improv with mayor Dr. Bruce Banman, a pep-rally entirely based on character, and a book drive that raised over 1000 books for local charity. At Friday’s Character Forum, over 100 participants met to discuss such events. Superintendent Kevin Godden and School Trustees Shirley Wilson and Cindy Schafer attended, along with students from the primary and secondary level, district-wide. Mouat grad Zack Melhus emceed the event, directing students in group discussion regarding the character initiative. The executive director of the Abbotsford Youth Commission, Bev Olfert, also led students at the forum, as did members of the U.F.V. Girls Basketball Team, notably Mouat grad Jaslyen Singh. Keynote speaker and former Mouat grad Sophie Schmidt shared an inspiring message about courage, including personal stories regarding her journey to success. Schmidt played soccer at the national level and received a bronze medal in the 2012 Olympic Games. Her message included the motto “Try Courage, Trust Courage and Tell Courage” and was an inspiration to everyone who attended.

Mouat vice principal Vijay Manuel shared a message regarding the influence of character in his life growing up in the Abbotsford community. Mr. Manuel is the Chair of the Abbotsford Character Council and was a key organizer of Friday’s forum. Chief Dan George teacher and Canadian Idol Top 100 contestant Amy Klassen performed for students at the event, as did Kiera Ventor, a grade seven student at A.S.I.A. Finally, members of the Mouat Character council including Harman Gill, Alicia Szczygielski, Selyen Singh, Sebastian Muermann, Jennifer Markin and Jory Smallenberg presented Mouat’s character initiative, specifically explaining the events of “We Are Hawks Week”. Then, Jim Callaghan, President of the Clearbrook Kiwanis Club, lead group discussions with the students, encouraging them to leave with an action plan of how they could similarly implement good character in their schools. All groups left with a formulated plan, and intend to meet in the New Year to discuss the progress of such. It is inspiring to see a generation of young leaders working toward a common goal within School District 34 and our city, causing the Abbotsford City of Character Youth Forum to be an astounding success.

A New School Year!

Feeling a bit shell shocked? Is summer really done??? Well, yes & no. We all get to enjoy the beautiful (hopefully) weather until Sep. 21st, but it's definitely time to get back into the 'school-mode'. Ah, the smell of freshly sharpened pencils, newly waxed floors, and the crisp fall air. A new school year is about to begin. At WJ Mouat Secondary, this promises to be a banner year for our school!!

Did you know that we have a school goal around literacy? Here it is: "To improve organization and idea development in students' composition writing." How good are you when it comes to developing your ideas, organizing them, and writing them down? Well, this is your year to become even better!!

Mouat is also focused on the school district's social responsibility goal. Our vehicle for this is the 'School of Character' initiative. Learn more Here and Here. In November of this year, Mouat will be receiving an international award for our Mouat Minute concept in Washington, DC, USA. Way to go Hawks! Our Character Council will be tasked with promoting good character throughout our school: classrooms, hallways, events, etc. Get involved here!

Let's make this a year to remember at WJ Mouat! Start with academics (make this your #1 priority & do your very best!). Next, live & learn with character! Practise & promote our values: respect, responsibility, integrity, caring, awareness, & teamwork. This will make a huge difference in the culture of our school if we all work hard on this. WJ Mouat Secondary's newly minted 50-member Character Council planned and executed #wearehawks week at the end of April, 2012. The components to the week included a school-wide assembly & kick-off, the humourous yet passionate 'Character Police', Mouat Minute videos on topics that addressed respect, responsibility, and caring. Abbotsford Mayor, Bruce Banman, participated in an Improv Show in front of a packed theatre where he spoke on character and connected our initiative with the City of Character initiative in Abbotsford, of which he is a member. Students were given an opportunity to show their support by leaving their had prints permanently on the walls of the cafeteria, and over 950 books were collected for charity. The biggest hit may well have been the #wearehawks t-shirt designed by Character Council member, Harman... more shirts have been ordered!

What a week and what a start to the School of Character movement. The best part? It was student-led!!

A Staff Character Committee of thirty worked together over the 2010/2011 school year to identify our common language of good character: Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Caring, Awareness, & Teamwork. The next step identified by the leaders of the committee was to hand the initiative over to students so that they could begin weaving in our common language into all the parts of what makes Mouat... Mouat. In fact the language was chosen because it is what we are already about! The goal, now, is to make our roll-out of 'what we're about' more intentional and more widespread. Perhaps teachable moments in classrooms will lead to a discussions on respect, admin-student discussions in the office lead to increase in responsible behaviour, school-wide projects will lead to greater awareness of the needs around us, modelling and impromptu discussions will lead to integrity, involvement in sport will lead to a better understanding of and commitment to the importance of working well with others in teams. Do these things happen already? Absolutely! Will we continue to build an even stronger school culture for all learners if we are more intentional in an on-going, cross-curricular, system-wide manner, with our common language of good character? Absolutely!

As new students, staff, parents, community supporters enter our building, the hope is that they will quickly be able to articulate the Mouat Way of doing things and then to add them to the ways they work & play at Mouat.

The Michael Smith Challenge is a national science contest written by over 1000 students in grades 8, 9, and 10 every year. It was piloted in BC in April 2002 and has run nationally every year since. The Michael Smith Challenge is the only nationwide competition covering all science subjects taught in grade 10. It’s offered in English and French and consists of 6 short answer questions on anything science related. For example, one year students were asked: “Calculate the number of water molecules that fell on Canada last year . . . ” Where would you begin?

This year WJ Mouat had 5 exceptional students attempt the Challenge: Anita dos Santos, Ben Klammer, Kulvir Sekhon, Arshdeep Ganda, and Spencer Spenst. All five students did extremely well and placed in the top 25% in Canada.

Healthy Living Groups

On Feb. 2, 2012, the Mouat Aboriginal Program launched a pilot project, a Healthy Living Girls' Group, which supports the respect, integrity and awareness aspects of Mouat's School of Character Initiative.

A group of seven girls meet once a week at lunch for 6 weeks to learn about a holistic approach to their health. Personal progress is recorded individually in a weekly Medicine Wheel Journey journal and reflected upon together weekly. A discussion is led on a different component of health each week by either a staff member from Aboriginal Health, Mouat P.E. teacher, Youth Care Worker or Mouat's Aboriginal Program Director. Mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health are subjects addressed through topics such as physical activity, nutrition, boundaries, self-esteem, and practicing gratitude.

Girls are literally taking steps towards reaching optimum health by recording the number of steps taken daily with a pedometer they each received. Healthy meals are enjoyed together at each group session as well as new friendships being formed. The response from the girls has been fabulous! A grant has even been applied for and approved for this group from the Aboriginal Sports Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council!!! The interest by other students has been overwhelming to not only start another Healthy Living Girls' Group, but also a Healthy Living Boys Group after Spring Break.

WJ Mouat Partners With Microsoft to become IT Academy

Business Education teacher Megan Warmerdam has completed the Microsoft Office Specialist program in Microsoft Word 2010 which allows Mouat to become one of the first schools in the province of British Columbia to be recognized as a Microsoft IT Academy. Students taking the Data Management 12 class will have the opportunity to gain proven technical skills which employers look for in today's innovation ecomony. These Microsoft Certification credentials will provide a competitive edge in embarking on careers with major corporations for Data Management 12 students.

Awareness

If you were to walk through the halls of the school at lunch time over the past few weeks, you would be bombarded by groups of students selling various items to raise awareness and support for a number of causes. For example the Mouat Mullets (picture to the right), a group of grade 12 boys who pour themselves into everything related to lunchtime intramurals, have taken the initiative to support both Adopt-A-Family and Cancer Research by ordering 'Mouat Mullet' wrist bands and selling them to the student body. Next, they are selling raffle tickets for the school to have the opportunity to shave off their prized mullets. Totals thus far have exceeded $200. Keep in mind that there is no course credit associated with their actions; it's simply being aware of what's going on around them and trying to make a difference in their world.

Of course, this is only the beginning at Mouat. Madame Castonguay's Social Studies students have been selling home-made cupcakes to benefit refugees in Tanzania (Click Here for info), Ms. St-Hilaire's Social Justice students participated in a full day 'Vow of Silence' complete with sponsors and all proceeds benefiting the Fistula Foundation, Mr. Thiessen's Entrepeneurship 12 students are selling Butter Chicken & beverages with 1/2 their proceeds set to benefit the Salvation Army, and the list goes on!

What a wonderful school community with a strong commitment to 'Awareness' both locally and globally!

Mouat is filled with students who are extremely respectful, responsible, and caring! One sees it in the halls, classrooms, and in the office. If you imagine 1500 students plus over 100 staff walking the halls between classes, you might expect a bit of a chaotic feel, but that is not the case! Have a look at students in the halls (random clip)... and check out some of the costumes on our Oct. 31st dress-up day.

Way to go Mouat students! You consistently demonstrate good character in our school community!!

WJ Mouat continues to promote healthy eating in our school and is proud to be a part of the BC School Fruit & Vegetable Nutritional Program this year (Brochure). Every two weeks, students will have the opportunity to sample various fruits and vegetables in their classrooms. There is no cost to students to participate. If you do not wish your student to participate, please fill in the permission form sent home with your student on September 9th and return it to the office before Oct 1st. Good Character

Good character was defined at our grade assemblies this past week. One of the concepts/terms identified as being foundational at Mouat is Respect. Imagine a school without respect. If all 1600 students & staff weren't respectful, the place would be thrown into utter chaos. It is actually happening in some parts of the world right now and has impacted the Fraser Valley very recently. Remember the riots in Vancouver over a hockey game?

In my opinion, respect has everything to do with treating other people the way you'd want to be treated & treating other people's things they way you'd want your own things to be treated. That makes sense to me. Does that connect with you?

First Day 101

It's almost here! Here are a few tips to get you through your first day at WJ Mouat!

--> Check the front doors for your name and the location of your HAT (Homeroom). Report to your HAT at the bell.

--> Maps will be available in your HAT class. If you get lost, look for any adult to help!

--> First Day Hours: 8:25am - 10:50am.

Warning Bell // 8:25 am

Homeroom // 8:30 - 9:10 am

Block A // 9:15 - 9:35 am

Block B // 9:40 - 10:00 am

Block C // 10:05 - 10:25 am

Block D // 10:30 - 10:50 am

Extended Day Classes 10:55 - 11:15 am

--> Plan to be early. You don't need to bring much with you. A pen or pencil would cover it for the first day.

--> Make a good first impression! When you meet your teachers, show them your best! Being polite and respectful are always a good start.

--> When the day is over, please leave campus asap.
